It is frequently seen here in residential areas, downtown areas, golf courses, and resort areas alike.

Tropical-looking yet surprisingly drought-tolerant, it is one of our favorite palm trees that we recommend for our surrounding desert areas.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

California Fan Palm Appearance

Waxy, medium-green fronds form a crown at the top of the palm tree. Large, spiny 3 feet long fronds that are palmate, or in other words, shaped like fans.

Sharp spines at the bottom of the fronds.

The palm tree can grow to 30-40 feet tall and 10 feet wide.

It has a single trunk covered in fibrous, brown, and gray bark. The trunk is wider at the base for additional stability.

Flower stalks grow small, light-colored flowers when in bloom, followed by small dark fruits that contain seeds.

California Fan Palm Landscaping Tips

California fan palm is a popular choice for desert landscaping. They are tough and hardy, resisting temperatures below frost, extreme heat, drought, and heavy winds.

Plant in groups for a dramatic effect. Line roads and driveways or plant in groups of two or three for a tropical look.

Provide enough vertical clearance keeping in mind that the palm can reach 40 feet tall.

Use outdoor lighting to highlight the California fan palm at night.

We recommend keeping the dead fronds pruned since they are very dry, and pose a fire hazard.
